More stores carried anime. People knew more about the anime. An example of how a company would analyze an anime "Devil Hunter Yohko" as an example. Companies are looking for fansubs to see what they can license to release in North America. More anime fans = more sales. Example of Patlabor CD sales where it sold out and they had to press more copies of the CD. TV hits like Dragonball, Sailor Moon, Inu Yasha, Gundam Wing were on TV. The start of the "Entitled" generation. Orange Road Laser Discs, and DVDs. Fansubbers still had control over their distribution and quality was still an issue with copies of the anime.
